About This Message

In The Ten Commandments and Relationships – You Shall Not Take the Name of the Lord Your God in Vain (Part 6), Rev Dr. Jim Master teaches on honouring God’s name through both words and lifestyle. This message challenges believers to live with integrity, speak with reverence, and represent God faithfully in all they do.

Sermon Notes

Exodus 20:7 (ESV)

7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless

who takes His name in vain.

Vows are binding.

They remain effective until death separates them

Vows from a biblical perspective.

Numbers 30:2

“If a man makes a vow to the Lord or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall

not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”

The word vow is translated from the Hebrew {neh'-der}

And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and

will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, So that I come again to my father’s house in

peace; then shall the Lord be my God: And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s

house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Genesis 28:20–22 (KJV)

1 Samuel 1:11 (KJV)

And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine

handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a

man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no rasor come

upon his head.

Numbers 6:2-5

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate

themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord: He shall separate

himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink,

neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels

even to the husk. All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no rasor come upon his

head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be

holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.

A vow is a solemn promise that a person makes to God to either perform some type of act, or

behave in a specified manner with men as witnesses.

An oath is where you make promise to the people as God is the witness.

Occasionally vows are made with no one around to witness.

Jacob was alone when he made his vow to God.

Oath - translated from the Hebrew word กษาวซ (sheb-oo-aw'} a sworn statement a person makes

to other men, invoking God as a witness, that something is true.

If a man makes a vow to the Lord or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall

not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Numbers 30:2 (NKJV)

So now we have brought God into the situation. With a vow, you made a promise to God, and with

an oath, you invoked God as a witness to your promise.

If you make a promise to God in the vow, or you make a promise to another person in an oath,

invoking God as a witness to your promise, if you don't fulfill your promise, you've taken the Lord's

name in vain!

“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless,

but taketh His name in vain".

The word “vain” (chapter 20:7), is translated from the Hebrew: אושׁ ושׁ o Transliteration: shâv' shav

Pronunciation: {shawv} shav

meaning emptiness and speech, lying or falsehood.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in lying,

(instead of Vain) for the Lord will not heal him guiltless that taketh his name in lying.

I “swear” to God.

If you're not being 100% honest when you say, I swear to God, then you're taking the Lord's

name in vain.

If you say, I swear to God when you're making a promise and you don't faithfully keep all of your

promise, you're taking the Lord's name in vain

When you take the Lord's name in vain, you also break the 3rd commandment.

James 5:12 (NAS)

But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but

let your yes be yes, and your no, no; so that you may not fall under judgment.

Matthew 5:33-37 NKJ

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall

perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is

God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the

great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or

black. 37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from

the evil one.

Oath

Greek: ὅρκος

Transliteration: horkos

Pronunciation: hor'-kos her'-

word or cost, it can refer to either a vow or an oath,

You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer

from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he

speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

John 8:44

Jesus and James were cautioning people on the seriousness of making a vow or taking an oath

when it's not necessary,

Deuteronomy 6:13 NLT

You must fear the LORD your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his

name.

The seriousness of the matter dictates that you swear invoking God as your witness

An oath is a promise made to men with God as the witness.

Wedding vows are a promise the couple make to God to enter a covenant relationship that God

has established.
