About This Message

In Why Spiritual Gifts Exist Today Part 9 – The Gifts of Miracles: Is Not What You Think It Is, Rev Dr. Jim Master teaches on the true biblical understanding of the gift of miracles and its purpose in the life of the believer. This message challenges common assumptions and brings clarity to how God’s power is manifested beyond human expectations. The teaching explores how the gift of miracles is not limited to dramatic or extraordinary events, but is deeply connected to God’s will, timing, and purpose. It emphasises that spiritual gifts are given for the edification of the Church and the advancement of God’s kingdom, not for personal recognition or spectacle. Rev Dr. Jim Master highlights the importance of faith, obedience, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit in operating in the gifts. Believers are encouraged to move beyond misconceptions and develop a mature understanding of how God works through His people in both visible and unseen ways. Ultimately, this message calls believers to align their expectations with God’s truth, to walk in humility, and to be open vessels through whom His power can flow for His glory.

Sermon Notes

The Gifts of Miracles is not what you think it is.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

1 Corinthians 12:7 KJV 1900

Greek: συμφέρω

Transliteration: sumpherō

Pronunciation: soom-fer’-o

Literally means to “bring together“

The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to bring together?

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by

the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the

same Spirit; 1 Corinthians 12:8–10 KJV 1900

“A miracle is an event that contradicts scientific laws.”

Paul was referring to a specific type of miracle when he listed this gift.

Paul listed this gift as a distinct gift, meaning separate or different.

Paul used a specific Greek word to describe this gift.

Agape -selfless affection, Eros -romantic passion, Philia -deep friendship, and Storge -familial

(family love) bonds

Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you

by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye

yourselves also know:

Acts 2:22 KJV 1900

Greek: δύναμις

Transliteration: dunamis

Pronunciation: doo'-nam-is

The first Greek word for miracles

is 'thaumasios’.

It is a term for general miracles that cause astonishment and wonder.

Number 1. 'Thaumasios'

astonishment and wonder.

θαυμάσιος (thaumasios) — “wonderful / marvelous”

The blind and the lame came to him in the Temple, and he healed them. The leading priests

and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles .

Matthew 21:14–15 NLT

Number 2. Signs (Semeion)

σημεῖον (sēmeion) — “Sign”

This is one of the most important biblical words for miracles.

Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a

sign from thee.

Matthew 12:38 KJV 1900

For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be

three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 12:40 KJV 1900

But before the sun came up, He was resurrected on the first day of the week, which is

Sunday.

Number 3. τέρας (teras) — “wonder”.

This word highlights the astonishing, attention-grabbing nature of miracles.

2 Thessalonians 2:9

“the coming of the lawless one.

‘Wonders’ is translated from the Greek τέρας

Transliteration: teras

Pronunciation: ter'-as

Number 4: Dunamis.

δύναμις (dynamis) — “power / mighty work”

Now He could do no mighty work ...

Mark 6:5 NKJV

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all

sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,

2 Thessalonians 2:9 NIV

Summary

Dynamis → Where it comes from (God’s power)

Teras → What it does to you (amazes you)

Thaumasios → How you feel (you marvel)

Sēmeion → What it means (points to the truth about God)

to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to

another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:10 NKJV

But if all of you are prophesying, and unbelievers or people who don’t understand these

things come into your meeting, they will be convicted of sin and judged by what you say. As

they listen, their secret thoughts will be exposed, and they will fall to their knees and

worship God, declaring, “God is truly here among you.”

1 Corinthians 14:24–25 NLT

As they listen, their secret thoughts will be exposed, and they will fall to their knees and

worship God, declaring, “God is truly here among you.”

1 Corinthians 14:25 NLT

Speaking in tongues is a ‘semeion’, a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers.

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has

raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto

righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:9–10 NKJV

First Corinthians chapter 12 is considered to be miracles when they occur, but

not dunamis miracles.

“The gift of miracles is a miraculous act of power, a dunamis.”

And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his

hands on a few sick people and heal them.

Mark 6:5 NLT

Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen when he was taken up. Then Elisha returned

to the bank of the Jordan River. He struck the water with Elijah’s cloak and cried out,

“Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” Then the river divided, and Elisha went across.

2 Kings 2:13–14 NLT

Then Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the Lord opened up a path through the water

with a strong east wind. The wind blew all that night, turning the seabed into dry land. So

the people of Israel walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of water

on each side! Exodus 14:21–22 NLT

God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles. When handkerchiefs or aprons that

had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases,

and evil spirits were expelled.

Acts 19:11–12 NLT

In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

Judges 21:25 NLT
