* discerning of spirits,

* the gift of prophecy.

Number one. How to define the gift of tongues.

That is what it is and what it is not!

Number two. The purpose of speaking in tongues.

Why do I need to speak in tongues?

for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of

knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts

of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy,

to another discerning of spirits, to another diDerent kinds of tongues, to another the

interpretation of tongues. 1 Corinthians 12:8–10 NKJV

“Tongues" is translated from the Greek word "Greek: γλῶσσα

Transliteration: glōssa

Pronunciation: gloce'-sah

gloce'-sah is made up of two words.

It's made up of the root word glossa, which means tongue or language, and sah, which

means to speak.

First, 1 Corinthians 12 lists speaking in tongues as one of the supernatural gifts.

Second, in 1 Corinthians 14:2, Paul states that the one speaking in tongues speaks to

God, and in the case of angelic dialects, no one understands.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one

understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.

Thirdly, what impressed people on the day of Pentecost was that uneducated Galileans,

who had never learned other languages, were speaking in foreign languages.

They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are

all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!

What made it supernatural was that they had never learned the languages they were

speaking.

The gift of tongues is not a God-given aptitude to learn other languages.

“The gift of tongues is defined as a supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit, in

which a person speaks in a language which he's never learned, and which he does not

understand.”

So anyone who speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has

been said. For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am

saying.

1 Corinthians 14:13–14 NLT

“Though I speak with the tongues of men, gloce'-sah of men, human dialects, and of

angels. Angels communicate too with each other and with God. So, there are dialects of

angels.

What is the purpose of tongues?

God does not confuse action with accomplishment.

There are three historical instances of speaking in tongues in the Book of Acts on the

day of Pentecost.

1. Acts chapter two, verse four.

2. Acts chapter 10, verses 45 and 46, at Cornelius' house.

3. Acts chapter 19, verse six in Ephesus.

The primary purpose of speaking in tongues is to enhance your prayer life.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one

understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for

as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot

be uttered. Romans 8:26–27 KJV 1900

And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he

maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Infirmities is translated from the Greek word Greek: ἀσθένεια

Transliteration: astheneia

Pronunciation: as-then'-i-ah

asthenia,, and asthenia means weakness, infirmity, or deficiency.

“for we know not what we should pray for, as we ought.”

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for

This phrase is translated from one Greek word, "Greek: δεῖ

Transliteration: dei

Pronunciation: die deh-on'

Definition: Third person ,

which means it is necessary.

“For we know not what we should pray for, as is necessary.”

"As is necessary, the Greek word "dei" is meant to emphasise just how great our

weakness is.

Firstly, you must ask.

Secondly, you must ask according to God's will.

The Holy Spirit takes over, interceding on our behalf.

Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I

understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.

For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since

people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit,

but it will all be mysterious.

“I have not because I ask not.

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His

will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we

have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

1 John 5:14–15 NKJV

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth

edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye

prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues,

except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now, brethren, if I come unto

you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by

revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

Verse five says, "He that prays in tongues edifies himself." How does it edify me? It does

so because I know that the Holy Spirit is interceding on my behalf according to the

perfect will of God.

Paul told us that if an unlearned or unbelieving person comes in and you're all speaking

in tongues, will he not say that you're mad?
