In this message, Rev. Dr. Jim Master explains the three main categories of spiritual gifts—manifestation gifts, ministry gifts, and motivational (serving) gifts. He shows how these gifts are given by the Holy Spirit for revelation, edification, and service, and how believers are called to steward them faithfully for the glory of God and the building up of the Church.
In Why Spiritual Gifts Exist Today – Part 5, Rev. Dr. Jim Master presents a balanced and biblical teaching on the different categories of spiritual gifts and their purpose in the life of the Church. Recognising the diverse Christian backgrounds represented within the body of Christ, he explains how spiritual gifts are sometimes misunderstood because believers refer to different biblical gift groupings.
Drawing from Scripture, Pastor Jim identifies three main categories of gifts: the manifestation gifts found in 1 Corinthians 12, the ministry gifts outlined in Ephesians 4, and the motivational or serving gifts described in Romans 12. He teaches that the manifestation gifts are “manifestations of the Spirit” given to reveal God’s presence and power for the benefit of all believers.
Using Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 14, he explains how gifts such as tongues and prophecy are meant to function with understanding and maturity, so that both believers and unbelievers may be edified and drawn to worship God. He emphasizes that spiritual gifts are not for personal display but for spiritual growth and unity within the Church.
The sermon also explores the ministry gifts given by Christ—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—as divine “presents” to equip the saints for ministry and strengthen the body of Christ. Pastor Jim clarifies the difference between spiritual offices and functions, highlighting that calling and service must work together.
Finally, he addresses the motivational gifts of service and ministry, reminding believers that every gift is a stewardship of God’s grace. Quoting Peter and Paul, he teaches that all gifts are distributed by the same Spirit and must be exercised with humility, faithfulness, and reverence, so that God alone may be glorified through Jesus Christ.
This message challenges believers to understand their gifts clearly, use them wisely, and serve faithfully within God’s design for His Church.
