In this message, Pastor Jim explores the continuing work of the Holy Spirit through spiritual gifts, showing how God still communicates, leads, and empowers His people today. He explains how the gifts operate through our spirit, how fellowship with God was designed from creation, and how believers can grow in sensitivity to the Spirit for the benefit of the whole body of Christ.
In Spiritual Gifts – Part 2, Pastor Jim takes a deeper look at how God communicates with humanity through the Holy Spirit and His spiritual gifts. Beginning with 1 Corinthians 12, he explains that spiritual gifts are given as the Spirit wills and are meant for the profit of all, not personal elevation.
He traces God’s original design for fellowship with man, showing that from the Garden of Eden, humanity was created with the ability to commune intimately with God. Although sin introduced separation and communication barriers, God never stopped speaking. Through biblical examples from Adam and Eve, to Cain, to Noah where we see that divine communication continued despite human failure.
He also unpacks the spirit–soul–body structure of man, clarifying how the human spirit functions through conscience, spiritual understanding, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Pastor Jim explains how the Word of God discerns between soul and spirit, and how the heart represents the center of our will, intellect, and emotions.
This sermon challenges believers to grow in spiritual discernment, recognize how God speaks, and walk in obedience to the Spirit. Ultimately, He emphasizes that spiritual gifts are not merely supernatural abilities, but tools God uses to restore fellowship, build the Church, and reveal His heart to His people.
1 Corinthians 12:7-10
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is
given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the
same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same
Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of
spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
When 'spirit' is spelt with a capital S, it indicates that it refers to the Holy Spirit.
1. Word of Wisdom.
2. Word of Knowledge
3. Gift of Faith
4. Gifts of Healings
5. Miracles
6. Prophecy
7. Discerning of Spirits
8. Different Kinds of Tongues
9. The Interpretation of Tongues
The gifts are as the Spirit wills.
Man was created with the ability to commune and fellowship with God.
“share one's intimate thoughts or feelings with someone” ...in this case, the person being
God.
Not only can we share our most intimate thoughts and feelings with God, but He can also
share His with us!
Genesis 3:8-11 (NKJV)
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and
Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of
the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid
myself.” And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of
which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
A Christophany is a visible appearance or non-physical manifestation of Jesus.
verse 8, “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the
day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the
trees of the garden.”
Firstly, because they were in the habit of walking and talking with God, and they were
familiar enough with God to know it was Him.
Secondly, communing with God was a daily experience in the Garden of Eden.
9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 So he said, “I
heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
Sin, along with the curse that accompanied it, established communication barriers and
separation between man and God.
Isaiah 59:2
But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face
from you, So that He will not hear.
Because of the curse resulting from their sin, Adam and Eve's ability to commune and
fellowship with God was marred, but not destroyed.
Genesis 4:8-16 (NKJV)
8Now Cain ]
talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field,
that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me
from the ground. 11 So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to
receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
15 And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on
him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
The Family of Cain
16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the
east of Eden.
Genesis 6:13-22New King James Version
The Ark Prepared
13 And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled
with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself
an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.
15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its
width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a window for the ark, and
you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall
make it with lower, second, and third decks.
17 And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven
all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die.
18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons,
your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to
keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20Of the birds after their kind, of
animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of
every kind will come to you to keep them alive.
21 And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself;
and it shall be food for you and for them.”
22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
Spirit - Soul - Spirit

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit,
soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The soul and the spirit cannot be separated.
Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing
even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the
thoughts and intents of the heart.
The Word of God can pierce between the soul and spirit.
Mind - Will - Emotion
The spiritual functions.
1.Conscience.
Romans 2:15
They demonstrate that God's law is written in their hearts for their own conscience and
thoughts either accuse them or tell them that they are doing right.
2. Spiritual intellect.

11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even
so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
Mark 2:8 (NKJV)
“Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts,
and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?
Acts 9:14 KJV
The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith
to be healed,
3. Sensitivity to the Spirit
John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
The first part is our conscience which corresponds to the will.
The second part allows us to discern or know the things of God
The third part allows us to have fellowship with God.
The heart is a composition of all three: the soul, will (intellect), and emotions.
Proverbs 13:12
12Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

Egypt.

Romans 10:9-10 (NKJV)
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has
raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto
righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
